Dubai Cares’ 3EA program in Niger was designed to improve reading, math, and social-emotional outcomes, while also providing tutoring support and strengthening the capacity of teachers and education authorities. The program benefited highly vulnerable Nigerian refugee children aged 6 to 14 who had been displaced by the insecurity caused by Boko Haram’s reign across the border in Nigeria. Parental and community engagement in children’s learning and protection was enhanced, and low-intensity targeted interventions such as mindfulness and brain games were integrated into the tutoring sessions. The program also generated evidence on the relationship between well-being and academic outcomes, and developed tools to measure and evaluate such interventions in crisis-affected contexts.
