Dubai Cares partnered with Leonard Cheshire Disability (LCD) to support the enrollment of 500 children with disabilities in mainstream primary schools in the Amolatar district. The program not only facilitated school enrollment but also conducted referrals for medical and rehabilitative treatment to ensure holistic support for the children.
The program aimed to achieve several key outcomes. It sensitized and trained teachers in inclusive education and effective teaching techniques, and provided locally-sourced assistive devices to schools to support students' development. The infrastructure of targeted primary schools was adapted to include ramps and accessible toilets, improving physical accessibility. An Inclusive Education Resource Centre was also established in Amolatar Town Hall, providing teachers and students with access to learning resources. The program incorporated gender-inclusive approaches to ensure equal participation for all children, and raised awareness among communities, School Management Committees, and Parent Teacher Associations about disability and inclusion. Additionally, it provided income-generating support to parents, helping them to better care for and support their children’s education.
