Dubai Cares, in partnership with the Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind (Sightsavers), implemented an integrated school health program in Liberia to address the lasting effects of the Ebola outbreak on education and health systems. The program targeted soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections and uncorrected vision problems, both widespread among school-aged children, especially in rural areas.
Key activities included training teachers to conduct school-based deworming and vision screening, supervising these interventions at scale, facilitating referrals and providing eyeglasses for children with visual impairments, engaging parents and communities to boost participation (including out-of-school children), and collaborating with the Ministries of Education and Health to institutionalize these services in national school health programs.
By enhancing system capacity and generating data on child eye health, the program helped build a more resilient education system where all children receive the health support needed to succeed.
