In partnership with Room to Read, Dubai Cares supported the post-earthquake recovery of education in Nepal following the devastating 7.9 magnitude earthquake on April 25, 2015, and the severe aftershock on May 12. The disaster killed over 8,800 people, including nearly 2,300 children, and destroyed or damaged thousands of homes and schools, leaving about 1 million students without classrooms.
In July 2015, Dubai Cares conducted a field visit to assess the situation, meet potential partners, and consult with officials. The Post-Earthquake Recovery Efforts for Education program was launched with a two-phase approach: first, rebuilding 73 classrooms and rehabilitating 48 others to restore safe learning environments; second, implementing Room to Read’s Literacy Program in 100 schools in Nuwakot, focusing on teacher training, library management, and providing quality reading materials.
In 2018, the program scaled up to Syangja district, supporting 8 schools with literacy interventions and assisting 25 girls through the Girls’ Education Program to support their transition into secondary school. The program ensured children returned to resilient schools with access to trained teachers and learning resources that support their recovery and continued education.
