It was estimated that children made up roughly 50% of the population of Mosul, with approximately 140,744 school-aged children. Reports indicated that nearly half of all schools in the city had been damaged or destroyed during the occupation and subsequent liberation of the city. Dubai Cares, in partnership with War Child UK and the Ministry of Education, worked on identifying priority areas in Mosul that were hit the hardest. The program included the rehabilitation of 12 schools in West Mosul to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment for 4,800 children. It also incorporated mine risk education activities for children due to the continued risk of unexploded devices in the city. In addition, the program aimed to train 60 teachers, along with 24 head teachers and school staff. As part of the program, the Ministry of Education coordinated with the local department of education to provide training and new materials aligned with the updated Iraqi education plan. The Ministry also initiated the formation of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) to encourage greater community engagement and aimed to reach 7,200 community members through outreach initiatives.
