Dubai Cares, in partnership with Plan International, launched the Teacher Training for Girls’ Education in Sierra Leone (TTIGE) program with two key components aimed at improving girls’ education through the empowerment of young women in rural communities.

The first component focused on providing young women, aged 18–26, with a pathway to become qualified teachers. These women were selected based on their talent and commitment, and were given practical teaching experience through a Learning Assistant phase, which placed them directly in schools to work with children. The second component supported their successful enrollment in and completion of Teacher Training College (TTC), ultimately enabling them to gain accreditation and employment as primary school teachers.

The program's integrated model of pre-service training and continuous mentoring enhanced both the quality and depth of teacher preparation, while also generating a lasting positive impact within the communities. It empowered young women, strengthened the local teaching workforce, and built resilience among communities still recovering from the effects of past crises such as Ebola, while also addressing the challenges posed by COVID-19 and other future disruptions that risked marginalizing girls’ education.
