يذهب ملايين الأطفال حول العالم إلى المدرسة وهم جائعون. ففي البلدان منخفضة ومتوسطة الدخل وحدها، يبدأ أكثر من 73 مليون طالب في المرحلة الأساسية يومهم دون وجبة متكاملة، مما يصعّب عليهم التركيز والتعلّم، أو حتى الحضور إلى الفصل الدراسي بمعدة فارغة. فالجوع يُعيق الأطفال عن تحقيق إمكاناتهم، وغالباً ما يدفعهم إلى ترك المدرسة نهائياً.
